Interesting post, Kevin. Re: Lick and other observatories (Mt. Wilson and Palomar), if you have not seen the PBS video "Journey to Palomar," you should. It's mostly about Hale but a lot on the telescopes and what it took to get them built. I watched it on my iPod (you can buy from iTunes for $1.99) and there is also a DVD. See http://www.pbs.org/thejourneytopalomar/ for more. I also blogged about it recently (11/8/09).

Speaking of American astronomy in the 19th century, I am reminded of Walt Whitman's impressions of astronomers (at least wordy ones):

When I heard the learn'd astronomer;
When the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns before me;
When I was shown the charts and the diagrams, to add, divide, and
measure them;
When I, sitting, heard the astronomer, where he lectured with much
applause in the lecture-room,
How soon, unaccountable, I became tired and sick;
Till rising and gliding out, I wander'd off by myself,
In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time,
Look'd up in perfect silence at the stars.
